Amidst the festivities in Hobart celebrating the coronation of Tasmanian-born Princess Mary Donaldson this weekend, the local city council will pay tribute to the royal family by planting a “significant tree”.
Hailing from Taroona, Mary Donaldson will soon make history as the first Australian-born Queen of a European monarchy.
The Tasmanian law graduate is set to be crowned Queen Consort of Denmark alongside her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, following Queen Margrethe’s abdication.
The City of Hobart say “careful and thoughtful consideration” had led staff to decide to plant a Tasmanian blue gum (eucalyptus globulus) in recognition of the Tasmanian royal.
The Tasmanian blue gum is renowned as “Tasmania’s floral emblem” and typically reaches a height of 45m, but could get as tall as 90-100m under ideal conditions.
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the tree will be planted in a yet to be confirmed location that will be accessible to the public.
“Hobart is immensely proud of future Queen Mary’s Tasmanian roots and we are excited to celebrate this joyous occasion with a meaningful gesture that reflects our shared history and connection,” Reynolds said.
“This gift not only symbolises the warmth and friendship between Hobart and Copenhagen but also aligns with the City of Hobart’s commitment to environmental sustainability, which is outlined in both our Street Tree Strategy and our Climate Strategy and aligns with the Crown Prince’s commitment to climate change.”

The council are also working “working through protocols” with the office of the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen and the Danish Royal House on a reciprocal significant tree that will be planted in Copenhagen “in honour of the enduring bond between the two cities”.
“Our Street Tree strategy and Climate Strategy drive us to enhance the greenery of our urban landscape, and by gifting trees, we contribute to a healthier and more beautiful future for Hobart,” Reynolds said.
The City of Hobart’s Our Street Tree strategy aims to expand the tree canopy covering the city to 40% by 2046.
