Simon Behrakis is the newest member of Tasmania’s House of Assembly after winning a Clark recount.
Behrakis, who replaces Elise Archer, says it is “an honour to be elected”.
“I am excited to hit the ground running to deliver what matters for the people of Clark, particularly on the issues which I have already been advocating for during my time as an Alderman for the City of Hobart,” Behrakis said in a statement.
“This includes building our state’s infrastructure to increase housing supply and reducing traffic congestion so that all Tasmanians, even our most vulnerable, can live, work and get around our State.”
Behrakis secured 55.2% of the vote, surpassing his former Hobart City Council colleague Will Coats who received 44.7%.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff congratulated the “fierce advocate” and welcomed him as the newest member of his government immediately following the final result announcement.
“Simon has represented the local community as Alderman in the Hobart City Council for the past five years and is well across the issues that matter to Tasmanians,” Rockliff says.
“I am confident that Simon will hit the ground running and be a strong voice for the people of Clark.”
Behrakis promotion to parliament will require a recount to fill his seat on the Hobart City Council.
