Former Tasmanian governor General Sir Phillip Bennett passes away

Former Tasmanian Governor General Sir Phillip Bennett has passed away at the age of 94.

Born on December 27 1928, Sir Phillip’s “life of public service touched the lives of many,” his funeral notice reads.

“His memory will be forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.”

Sir Phillip had an impressive military career, starting as a senior officer of the Australian Army before becoming Chief of the Australian Defence Force from 1984 to 1987.

He then went on to become Governor of Tasmania from 1987 to 1995.

“Phillip’s dedication over his 40 years in the Defence Force and later as Governor of Tasmania, Administrator of the Commonwealth, Chairman of the Australian War Memorial Foundation and genuine interest in the lives of others created lasting memories that will be treasured by his friends in Australia and throughout the world.”

Sir Phillip passed away peacefully on August 1.

A Military service funeral to honour his life will be held at the Royal Military College in Canberra on August 15 from 10am.
